Visual Art Workshops

Drawing - All drawing workshops will result in a finished composition.

Beyond Stickmen Grades 4-8
One of the most essential elements of art is drawing. Get past the “stickmen” stage of development by learning basic drawing exercises and techniques. Through contour drawing and negative space, students will use the right side of the brain.

3D Drawing Effects Grades 4-8
Create the illusion of a 3rd dimension on a 2 dimensional surface (paper). Use value changes from light to dark and gradations between to show depth with positive images and negative spaces.

Perspective Drawing Grades 4-8
Sketch landscapes and buildings indicating scale from different eye levels and viewpoints. Explore vanishing points on the horizon.

Drawing with Imagination Grades 4-8
Stretch your imagination using exercises with line and texture. Departing from realism into fantasy use indistinct images such as clouds to create your own interpretation of what you see.

Cartooning Grades 1-8
Students will work on facial expression for feelings and body action for movement. Special occasions, different cultures, costumes, settings, current and historical events will be encouraged. Cartoons may be used to create a visual memory.

Painting - Compose a landscape or still life using the elements of design.

Acrylic Painting Grades 4-8
Use colour theory and line to create mood, repetition and visual rhythm. Study painting styles of different artists for inspiration.

Watercolour Painting Grade 4-8
Students will focus on specific watercolour techniques using quality paint, brushes and paper. They will use colour theory and line to express feeling, contrast, variety and visual harmony.

Painting on Silk Grades 4-8
Students will draw their own design and paint on silk with fabric dyes. They will use the ancient technique of forming resist lines with special applicators.

Chinese Style Brushstroke Painting Grades 1-8
Students will use tempera paint and a variety of quality brushes including Chinese wolf hair. They will practice brushstroke techniques and apply them to a finished Oriental painting or fan.

Multi Mediums - Design with texture

Origami Grades 1-8
The making of three-dimensional structures will help young minds grasp concepts of proportion, ratio and symmetry. Helps improve listening, cognitive and dexterity skills. Appropriate folding techniques for different grades.

Multimedia Collage Grades JK-8
Students will glue paper, fabric and various other materials to create visual compositions. They will combine textural media, found objects and visual shapes to produce touchable and visually pleasing art. Themes may be requested to cover curriculum specifics.

Graphic Design Grades 4-8
Students will experiment with the elements and principals of design. They will create newspaper or magazine layouts, cards or a poster with techniques a graphic designer would use.

Fibre Art Grades JK-8
Create a tapestry of texture and colour with textiles. The visual story will express feelings, ideas or an experience. Curriculum topics can be covered by request e.g. Medieval times, Ancient Cultures, Aboriginal and First Nations.

Paper Masks Grades JK-8
Cultural Styles: Aboriginal, Egyptian, Mayan, African, Medieval, etc. (Request at booking) Students will create a unique, three-dimensional mixed media fantasy mask. These finished masks can be worn and integrated with dance, drama and other subjects in the curriculum.

Plaster Masks Grades 4-8
Use your own face to create a 3D painted and decorated mask. Using flexible gauze and acrylic paints students will work in pairs. Themes can include special events such as Halloween and Mardi Gras and cultures e.g.; Ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Aboriginal or Medieval (Request at booking)

Historical Hats Grade 4-8
Students will create a three-dimensional hat such as Egyptian, Medieval or other headpiece of their own design starting with a pattern. They will combine textural media and shape.

Wacky Wearable Sculpture Hats Grades JK-3
Using a standard paper base, students will use free form shapes to fashion a fantasy hat. Basic folding, curling and cutting techniques will allow creativity.

Puppetry Grades JK-3
Make and decorate fleece hand puppets using fabrics and other soft media. Lessons will be about texture and proportion. Themes may include special occasions, history, occupational and cultural costumes and animals.

Things with Wings Grades JK-3
This is a fun way to learn about and make flying creatures such as butterflies, bats, birds or flying insects using a variety of materials.

Sculpture

Clay Sculpture Creations JK-8
- 3D high relief shape and form
- Low and sunken relief
Students will learn pinch pot, coil and slab methods. Using tools and their hands they will form unique three-dimensional clay sculptures which can be air dried. Young students may choose animals or fantasy creatures. Low relief tiles with texture such as roman coins, Egyptian hieroglyphs, or fossils are other choices for older students.

Wood Sculpture - Totem Poles Grade 4-8
Students will each use acrylic paints to design a 3-D totem pole to tell a story that describes events in their lifetime to help them understand how other artists use symbols to create a story. Students will use a central axis in their art for symmetry and balance.

Multi-Media Sculpture Grades 4-8
Free Form/Geometric wood shapes and other materials will be used to make a three-dimensional painted mixed media sculpture.

Painting on Wood Forms Grades 4-8
Learn acrylic painting techniques on a pre-cut shape to create a colourful wooden object using the elements of design. Themes may be requested at booking time e.g. fish, birds, hearts for Mothers Day or Valentines Day.

Printmaking

Relief Etching & Print Making Grades 4-8
Create designs in low relief for print making. Students will develop their own compositions and use various tools to press into styrofoam. Their original designs will be transferred onto paper using special inks and brayers.

Screen Print Making Grades 4-8
Learn print making techniques with special inks & silk screens. Make your own stencils and use a squeegee to pull ink through screens onto paper. T-shirts can be requested at an additional cost. Andy Warhol made this process famous!

Watercolour Print Making Grades 1-8
Students will draw their own picture and transfer it onto a plexiglass plate, then onto paper for a frameable monoprint. Watercolour materials and printmakers’ tools will be used.

Drama, Music & Dance Workshops

Creative Drama JK-8
Students will improvise and role play using familiar writing, and a variety of genres – survival, mystery, history, science or problem solving. Theatre games, props, and tableaux may be used in the process. Historic themes of ancient civilizations, different cultures, medieval hierarchy, special occasions and festivals may also be used.

Creative Movement through Dance JK-8
Students will explore movement sequences from various cultures and sources and produce basic choreography to practice and perform. Dance styles may include zumba tomics, pop, contemporary, interpretive, and folk. Warm ups may include stretching and yoga poses. Props may be utilized. Emphasis is on having fun while getting physical activity.

Puppets and Folk Tales Grade JK-3
Students will make puppets and use them to learn basic puppetry skills while creating their own fairy tales, legends and/or folk tales.

The Art of the Drum Circle Grades JK-8
Students will work in teams using drum pads and drum sticks to create rhythmical awareness of ancient cultures.

We've Got the Beat Grades JK-8
Explore rhythm through percussion instruments. Using instruments provided, students will examine composition, beats, rhythm and rhyme.
